MoF issues Gazette Notification for Rani Durgavati Coin

The Government of India will issue a ₹500 commemorative coin to mark the 500th Birth Anniversary of Rani Durgavati. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on October 3, 2023, confirming the coin.

Rani Durgavati (October 5, 1524 – June 24, 1564) reigned as the Queen of Gondwana from 1550 to 1564. She was married to Dalpat Shah, the son of King Sangram Shah of the Garha Kingdom. She is renowned for her resolute defense of her kingdom against the Mughal Empire.

The metal composition of the ₹500 coin will consist of Pure Silver (99.9%). The coin will weigh 40 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin's description is as follows.

Obverse:  The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capital of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed  below, flanked  with the  word “भारत” and  "INDIA" at right and left periphery of the coin with Rupee Symbol "₹” and denomination  value of “500” in International Numerals below the Ashoka Lion Capital.

Reverse: The face of the coin shall bear the portrait of Rani Durgavati in the centre. The inscription "रानी दुर्गावती की 500वीं जयन्ती" shall be written in Devanagari script on the upper periphery on the coin and the inscription "500th Anniversary of Rani Durgavati" in English is depicted on the lower periphery of the coin. The year "2023" in international numerals shall be written below the portrait of Rani Durgavati.

Earlier, on July 1, 2023, the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi announced that the 500th birth anniversary of Rani Durgavati would be celebrated at the national level by the Ministry of Culture on October 5, 2023, with a commemorative coin, a special postal stamp, and a dedicated film highlighting her extraordinary life and legacy.

This marks the third commemorative coin in pure silver, following the releases of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the 250th Session of Rajya Sabha by the Government of India.
