2023 - Rani Durgavati 500th Birth Anniversary | Commemorative Coin

The 12th commemorative coin of 2023 was released to celebrate the 500th Birth Anniversary of Rani Durgavati.

Rani Durgavati remains one of the most revered warrior-queens in Indian history, celebrated for her courage, leadership, and unyielding spirit in defending her kingdom. Born in 1524 to the Chandela ruler Raja Salivahana, she was raised in an environment steeped in martial values, administrative wisdom, and cultural refinement. From a young age, she exhibited exceptional talent in horse riding, archery, and military strategy—skills that would later define her legacy.

Her marriage to Dalpat Shah, the son of Gond king Sangram Shah, marked a significant union between the Chandela and Gond dynasties. After Dalpat Shah’s early death, Rani Durgavati assumed the responsibility of governing the Gond kingdom as regent for her minor son, Bir Narayan. She proved herself to be an able and visionary administrator, strengthening the kingdom’s economic foundations, promoting agriculture, and ensuring justice and welfare for her subjects. Her rule brought stability and prosperity, earning her deep respect among her people.

Durgavati’s most enduring legacy, however, lies in her valiant resistance against Mughal expansion. When Asaf Khan, a Mughal general under Emperor Akbar, marched towards her territory, she refused to submit or negotiate away her sovereignty. Instead, she led her forces into battle with remarkable bravery, choosing to face a far larger and better-equipped army rather than accept defeat. Mounted on her famed elephant, Sarman, she personally guided her troops, demonstrating an exemplary combination of courage and strategic acumen.

Despite her fierce resistance, the odds were overwhelming. On 24 June 1564, unwilling to be captured after sustaining injuries, she chose to sacrifice her life on the battlefield. Her martyrdom became a symbol of honor, dignity, and unbreakable spirit. Rani Durgavati’s commitment to defending her land and people has since inspired countless generations.

Her legacy is commemorated in various ways across India. The state of Madhya Pradesh observes “Balidan Divas” in her memory, institutions and public landmarks are named after her, and historians continue to celebrate her as a paragon of bravery and good governance. Rani Durgavati’s life remains a powerful reminder of the strength and leadership of women in India’s historical narrative, embodying resilience, patriotism, and an unwavering sense of duty.

Hyderabad Mint Opens Bookings for Sri Sathya Sai Baba Coin Sets

The India Government Mint, Hyderabad, has opened the bookings for the ₹100  commemorative coin  issued to mark the  Birth Centenary of Bhagwan Sri Sathya Sai Baba . The bookings are open from November 19, 2025, and it is subject to limited availability. Earlier in the day, the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi released the commemorative coin and postage stamp to mark the event at Sri Sathya Sai Hill View Stadium, Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh.
