Shri Vijay Ranjan Singh Appointed CMD of SPMCIL

The Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL) appointed Shri Vijay Ranjan Singh as its Chairman and Managing Director on September 27, 2023. His appointment, under the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, is for a period of five years or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Shri S.K. Sinha, Chairman and Managing Director (HR), and Shri Ajay Agarwal, Director (Finance), among others, welcomed the new CMD.

A 1996-batch Indian Forest Service officer of the Karnataka cadre, Shri Vijay Ranjan Singh brings over 27 years of experience in public administration. Before joining SPMCIL, he held key positions in the Karnataka Forest Department, the Department of Fertilizers, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Karnataka Bhavan in New Delhi, and the Zoo Authority of Karnataka.

SPMCIL is a Miniratna Category-I central public sector enterprise under the administrative control of the Ministry of Finance. It is responsible for the production of banknotes, security paper, postage stamps, passports, visas, medals, and commemorative coins.

Shri Vijay Ranjan Singh succeeded Smt. Tripti Patra Ghosh, who served as CMD from May 1, 2018, for a five-year tenure. Under his leadership, SPMCIL is expected to continue its focus on modernisation, technological advancement, and self-reliance in security printing and minting.

Govt Clears RBI Pilot for ₹10 and ₹20 Polymer Banknotes

The Government of India has taken the first formal step towards the possible introduction of polymer banknotes after approving the Reserve Bank of India's proposal to conduct field trials of polymer-based ₹10 and ₹20 notes. The Ministry of Finance has authorised the RBI to print one billion pieces (one hundred crore) each of the ₹10 and ₹20 polymer banknotes for pilot circulation across selected regions of the country. The approval was confirmed by the Minister of State for Finance, Shri Pankaj Chaudhary, in a written reply to questions raised in the Lok Sabha. According to the government, the RBI intends to introduce the polymer banknotes on a trial basis to evaluate their performance under India's diverse climatic and circulation conditions. The Republic India's commemorative coinage has witnessed several unusual chapters where coins officially approved by the Government of India, and was gazette notified by the Ministry of Finance, were never made available to the collecting community or the general public. While most commemorative coins eventually reach collectors either through circulation or mint-issued proof and uncirculated sets, a handful of issues remain exceptions.
