Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat Unveils Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee's Coin

The Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, unveiled the ₹125 commemorative coin and postage stamp to mark the 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on July 9, 2025, at Siri Fort Auditorium, August Kranti Marg, New Delhi, as part of the two-year commemoration being observed from July 6, 2025, to July 6, 2027.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union MoS for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences, PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, and the Departments of Atomic Energy and Space; Dr. Anirban Ganguly, Chairman of the Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation; Dr. Mahesh Chandra Sharma, Chairman of the Research & Development Foundation for Integral Humanism; along with other distinguished guests.

Addressing the gathering, Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, highlighted the significant contributions of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee to nation-building. He emphasized that Dr. Mookerjee consistently raised his voice against appeasement politics and paved the way for many individuals, including himself. Shri Shekhawat also mentioned that the Ministry of Culture has resolved to organize commemorative programs continuously over the next two years in honour of Dr. Mookerjee.

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh described Dr. Mookerjee as a visionary social reformer who strongly opposed the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir. He noted that Dr. Mookerjee's struggle came to fruition in 2019 with the abrogation of Article 370 from the Indian Constitution.

This is the second time a commemorative coin has been issued on the same theme. Earlier, coins in denominations of ₹100, ₹50, ₹10, and ₹2 were released in April 2002 to mark the Birth Centenary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee. They were unveiled at a function in Kolkata by the then Union Minister of Tourism, Shri Jagmohan.

This marks the 15th commemorative coin release for the year 2025, minted by the India Government Mint, Hyderabad. The bookings are expected to open soon on the India Government Mint's website and will be updated in the current and upcoming bookings section.
