Shri Sarbananda Sonowal Releases ₹50 Coin on NMPA's Golden Jubilee
The Hon’ble Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, today released the ₹50 commemorative coin and postal stamp to mark the Golden Jubilee of the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) on October 15, 2025, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
The port, often referred to as the Maritime Gateway of Karnataka, has played a pivotal role in India’s maritime trade and coastal development over the past five decades.
The event was graced by the presence of Hon’ble Union Minister for Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs & Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya; Shri R. Lakshmanan, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways; and several senior officials from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and the New Mangalore Port Authority.
Addressing the curtain raiser event, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, said it is a proud and momentous occasion for all Indians as the New Mangalore Port — which began operations in 1975 — completes 50 years of service.
He stated, “India’s maritime sector has witnessed transformational growth. The Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 provides a roadmap to revolutionize the maritime ecosystem, and the government expects investments worth ₹80 lakh crore in the domestic maritime industry.”
Shri Sonowal highlighted that NMPA, through meticulous planning, modern infrastructure, advanced mechanization, digitization, and green initiatives, has built a legacy of excellence.
He noted that over the past five decades, the New Mangalore Port — the only major port in Karnataka — has emerged as one of India’s best-performing ports, growing from handling a few thousand tonnes of cargo to 46.01 million tonnes during FY 2024–25.
The Minister informed that a new deep-draft general cargo berth is under construction and will be operational soon. He also mentioned that NMPA is the second-largest LPG handling port in India and a growing hub for cruise tourism, with cruise vessels calling since 2002.
Shri Sonowal further stated that the port has achieved full digitization of documentation systems and is among the first major ports fully powered by solar energy, reflecting its commitment to sustainable growth and green port operations.
The Ministry of Finance had issued a gazette notification on April 22, 2025, officially confirming the issuance of this coin.
This release marks the 24th commemorative coin for the year 2025, minted by the India Government Mint, Hyderabad. The bookings for the Proof and UNC sets are expected to open soon on the India Government Mint’s website and will be updated under the current and upcoming bookings section.
