2025 - New Mangalore Port Authority | Commemorative Coin

A commemorative coin of ₹50 will be issued to mark the Golden Jubilee of New Mangalore Port Authority. The Ministry of Finance has issued the gazette notification on April 22, 2025.

New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) is one of India’s key major ports, strategically located in Panambur, Karnataka. As the only major port in the state, it plays a pivotal role in facilitating maritime trade on the west coast of India. Established on May 4, 1974, and formerly known as the New Mangalore Port Trust, it was later reconstituted as the New Mangalore Port Authority under the Major Port Authorities Act, 2021.

The port acts as a vital link between Karnataka's industrial and agricultural heartlands and global trade routes. It handles a diverse range of cargo, including crude oil, LPG, coal, fertilizers, timber, iron ore, coffee, and containerized goods. With 14 fully operational berths, the port is equipped with deep draft facilities and modern cargo-handling infrastructure. A dedicated container terminal, developed through public-private partnership, further strengthens its cargo capabilities by ensuring faster vessel turnaround and streamlined logistics.

New Mangalore Port Authority enjoys excellent connectivity through rail and road networks, making it a preferred choice for industries in Karnataka and neighboring regions. The port has adopted several digital initiatives, including the Port Community System (PCS) 1x, e-invoicing, e-payments, and online berth allocation, which enhance transparency and operational efficiency. It is also a prominent cruise tourism hub, welcoming international cruise liners and contributing to coastal tourism growth in the region.

The authority has taken significant steps toward sustainable port operations by promoting the use of renewable energy such as solar power, improving waste management systems, and reducing its environmental impact. These green port initiatives align with the Government of India’s Maritime India Vision 2030, focusing on future-ready, clean, and energy-efficient ports.

Future plans for the port include further expansion of facilities, deeper dredging to accommodate larger vessels, improved hinterland connectivity, and increased private sector participation to enhance service delivery and capacity. These strategic developments position NMPA as a competitive and future-oriented maritime hub in India.
