New Commemorative Coin: Centenary Year of Andhra University
The Government of India will issue a ₹100 commemorative coin to mark the Centenary Year of Andhra University. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on April 22, 2026, confirming this coin.
Andhra University is one of India’s oldest and most respected institutions of higher education, established in 1926 in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. It offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs across disciplines such as arts, science, engineering, law, management, and pharmacy. Over the decades, the university has earned a strong reputation for academic excellence, research contributions, and cultural enrichment. Its scenic campus and modern facilities attract students from across the country and abroad. With a rich legacy of producing distinguished alumni, Andhra University continues to play a vital role in the educational and intellectual development of the nation.
The metal composition of the ₹100 coin will consist of a Quaternary Alloy, comprising 50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel, and 5% Zinc. The coin will weigh 35 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin's description is as follows.
Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “100” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.
Reverse: This face of the coin shall bear the official logo of Andhra University at the center of the coin. The year “1926” in international numerals shall be inscribed to the left of the logo and the year “2026” in international numerals shall be inscribed to the right of the logo. On the upper periphery of the coin, the inscription “आंध्र विश्वविद्यालय का शताब्दी वर्ष” shall be inscribed in Devanagari script. On the lower periphery of the coin, the inscription “Centenary Year of Andhra University” shall be inscribed in English.
This will be the sixth university to feature on a commemorative coin apart from the institutions. This ₹100 coin pays tribute to Andhra University, celebrating its glorious centenary year and a hundred years of outstanding contribution to higher education and nation-building.
