New Commemorative Coin: 1000 Years of Modhera Sun Temple

The Government of India will issue a ₹100 commemorative coin to celebrate the 1000 Years of the Modhera Sun Temple, Gujarat. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on September 18, 2026, confirming this coin.

The Modhera Sun Temple in Gujarat is one of India’s finest surviving temples dedicated to Surya, the Sun God. Built in the early 11th century during the reign of Solanki King Bhima I, the temple is renowned for its intricate carvings, grand architecture and carefully planned eastward orientation. The complex consists of the magnificent Surya Kund, Sabha Mandapa and the main shrine, all decorated with detailed sculptures depicting Hindu deities, celestial figures, dancers, musicians and mythological scenes. The temple is an outstanding example of the Maru-Gurjara style of architecture and is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India as a monument of national importance.

The metal composition of the ₹100 coin will consist of a Nickel Silver, comprising 60% Copper, 20% Nickel, and 20% Zinc. The coin will weigh 32 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin's description is as follows.

Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “100” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.

Reverse: This face of the coin shall bear the motif of Modhera Sun Temple, Gujarat at the centre of the coin. The inscription “मोढेरा सूर्य मंदिर, गुजरात के 1000 वर्ष” in Devanagari script shall be inscribed on the upper periphery of the coin, with the year “1026-2026” in international numerals inscribed above the motif of Modhera Sun Temple. The inscription “1000 Years of Modhera Sun Temple, Gujarat” in English shall be inscribed on the lower periphery of the coin.

This ₹100 coin will mark a major cultural and historical milestone, honouring 1000 years of the magnificent Modhera Sun Temple and its enduring legacy of architectural and artistic excellence. Additionally, there are other commemorative coin releases to look forward to in the coming months.
