New Commemorative Coin: Shrimad Rajchandra

The Government of India will issue the commemorative coin with denominations of ₹150 and ₹10 to mark 150th Birth Anniversary of Shrimad Rajchandra. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on June 23, 2017, confirming this coin.

Shrimad Rajchandra was a renowned Indian spiritual thinker, poet, philosopher and reformer whose teachings continue to inspire people across generations. Born in 1867, he was known for his profound knowledge of Jain philosophy and his emphasis on self-realisation, truth and spiritual awakening. He is also remembered for his close association with Mahatma Gandhi, whom he deeply influenced during Gandhi's formative years. Shrimad Rajchandra's writings and spiritual teachings remain an important part of India's philosophical and spiritual heritage.

The metal composition of the ₹150 coin will consist of a Quaternary Alloy, comprising 50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel, and 5% Zinc. The coin will weigh 35 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. While the ₹10 coin will be bi-metallic, with an Aluminium Bronze outer ring and a Copper-Nickel centre. The coin's description is as follows.

Obverse: The face of both the coins shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.

Reverse: This face of both the coins shall bear the portrait of “Shrimad Rajchandra” in the centre. The inscription “श्रीमद राजचंद्र” and “150 वीं जयंती” shall be written on upper left and lower left periphery of the coin in Devanagari script. The inscription “Shrimad Rajchandra” and “150th Birth Anniversary” shall be written on the upper right and lower right periphery of the coin respectively. The year "1867" and “1901” in international numerals shall be written on the left and right side of the portrait of Shrimad Rajchandra.

The release ceremony is expected to take place on June 29, 2017, and the commemorative coin is reportedly being minted at the India Government Mint, Kolkata. The possibility and upcoming coins page have been updated for your reference.
