PM Modi Releases Shrimad Rajchandra Commemorative Coins

The Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, released the commemorative coin to mark the 150th Birth Anniversary of Shrimad Rajchandraji on June 29, 2017, at Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Vijay Rupani, was also present.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said that Mahatma Gandhi’s thoughts have the power to help address many of the challenges facing the world today.

He emphasized the importance of staying connected with our history as a society. Recalling the contributions of Shrimad Rajchandraji on his 150th birth anniversary, Prime Minister Modi called for greater academic research into his life, philosophy and teachings.

Speaking about cleanliness, Shri Modi said that it must become a habit and a way of life. He said that making cleanliness a part of everyday life would be a fitting tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary in 2019. The Prime Minister also urged people from across the world to visit the Sabarmati Ashram and learn about Mahatma Gandhi’s life and legacy.

Making a strong statement against violence in the name of cow protection, the Prime Minister said that India is a land of non-violence and the land of Mahatma Gandhi. He recalled that no one had spoken more strongly about protecting cows than Mahatma Gandhi and Acharya Vinoba Bhave, while emphasizing that such protection must never become an excuse for violence.

He strongly condemned the killing of people in the name of cow worship or Gau Bhakti, stating that such acts would not be acceptable and were contrary to the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. He emphasized that there is no place for violence in society and that no individual has the right to take the law into his or her own hands. The Prime Minister urged people to work together to build the India envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi—an India of which the nation’s freedom fighters would be proud.

This release marks the first commemorative theme for the year 2017, coins minted by the India Government Mint, Kolkata.

New Commemorative Coin: Mahanayak Uttam Kumar

The Government of India will issue a ₹100 commemorative coin  as part of the Centenary Celebration of  Mahanayak Uttam Kumar . The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on September 3, 2026, confirming this coin. Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, born Arun Kumar Chatterjee on September 3, 1926, was one of the most celebrated actors in the history of Indian cinema. Revered as the “Mahanayak” of Bengali cinema, he captivated audiences with his remarkable acting, charismatic screen presence and versatility. His unforgettable partnership with Suchitra Sen created some of the most iconic films of Bengali cinema. With classics such as Saptapadi, Harano Sur, Nayak and Antony Firingee, Uttam Kumar left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire generations. The Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, released the ₹100  commemorative coin  to mark the Centenary Year of Shri Ram College of Commerce  (SRCC), University of Delhi, today, on September 5, 2026, during his participation at the college campus in New Delhi, coinciding with Teachers' Day. The release ceremony was attended by the Union Minister of Education, Shri Pralhad Joshi; Shri Ajay S.
