PM Modi to Release ₹50 Coin for Sikkim’s Golden Jubilee
The Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, is scheduled to release a ₹50 commemorative coin on the occasion of the 50 Glorious Years of Sikkim's Statehood on May 29, 2025, at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok.
The ceremony is expected to be graced by the Chief Minister, Shri Prem Singh Tamang, along with other ministers and distinguished dignitaries.
The Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang, on May 14, 2025, announced that the Prime Minister will visit Sikkim to commemorate the occasion.
Sikkim, the picturesque Himalayan state, marked 50 years since its merger with the Indian Union, which took place on May 16, 1975. To commemorate this historic milestone, the state celebrated 50 Glorious Years of Statehood on May 16, 2025. As part of the ongoing celebrations, the Hon'ble Prime Minister will highlight Sikkim’s remarkable transformation into a progressive, eco-conscious, and culturally vibrant region. Featuring rich cultural showcases and insightful discussions, the Golden Jubilee Conclave on May 28, 2025, will reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and chart a sustainable vision for the future.
This will be the first-ever commemorative coin with a ₹50 denomination to be minted in pure silver (99.9% fineness). Unlike earlier ₹50 commemorative coins, which were typically struck in quaternary alloys or other base metals, this silver edition marks a significant departure in both composition and prestige. It underscores the importance of the occasion—50 Glorious Years of Sikkim’s Statehood—and is expected to become a prized addition for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on May 13, 2025, officially confirming the issuance of this coin. This commemorative coin is reportedly minted by the India Government Mint, Kolkata. Additionally, several more commemorative coin releases are expected this year, as outlined in the upcoming and possibility section.
