New Commemorative Coin: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

The Government of India will issue a ₹150 commemorative coin on the occasion of the '150th Birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel'. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on September 30, 2025, confirming this coin.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, known as the "Iron Man of India," was a key leader in the Indian freedom struggle and the country’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. He played a crucial role in the integration of over 560 princely states into the Indian Union after independence. A staunch nationalist and skilled administrator, Patel was deeply respected for his firm leadership and practical approach. His legacy is commemorated by the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue, located in Gujarat.

The metal composition of the ₹150 coin will consist of Pure Silver (99.9%). The coin will weigh 40 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin's description is as follows.

Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “150” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.

Reverse: This face of the coin shall bear the image of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in the center of the coin. The year 1875 – 2025 in the international numerals shall be inscribed below the image of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The text “सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल की 150 वीं जयंती” shall be inscribed in Devanagari script on the upper periphery of the coin and “150th Birth Anniversary of Shri Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel” shall be inscribed in English on the lower periphery of the coin.

This marks the second occasion on which a commemorative coin is being issued in honour of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Previously, in 1996, coins in denominations of ₹100, ₹50, ₹10, and ₹2 were released, not tied to any specific milestone like a Birth Centenary, but as a tribute to his enduring legacy and invaluable contributions to the nation.

As part of the celebrations, the Government of India has launched a two-year-long nationwide programme from 2024 to 2026, commemorating Sardar Patel’s pivotal role in unifying the country. Various events and initiatives are being held across the nation to recall and honour his monumental legacy.

The possibility of this ₹150 commemorative coin had been discussed several times on this blog, dating back to as early as May 2024. The possibility and upcoming coins page have been updated for your reference.
