2025 - Jammu Srinagar Railway Line | Commemorative Coin
A commemorative coin of ₹100 will be issued to mark the commissioning of the Jammu–Srinagar Railway Line, featuring the Chenab Bridge. The Ministry of Finance has issued the gazette notification on February 6, 2025.
The commissioning of the Jammu–Srinagar Railway Line marks a historic milestone in the region’s infrastructure development, significantly enhancing connectivity between Jammu and Kashmir’s two key cities. This ambitious project, which has been under development for several years, is now a reality, bringing immense economic and social benefits to the people of the Union Territory.
The railway line is a crucial component of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, aimed at integrating the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India through an all-weather, reliable transportation network. This line not only improves accessibility for local residents but also bolsters trade, tourism, and strategic connectivity in the region.
With the successful commissioning of this railway line, travel time between Jammu and Srinagar has been significantly reduced, providing a safer and more efficient alternative to the existing road network, which is often affected by landslides and harsh weather conditions. The project includes the construction of state-of-the-art tunnels and bridges, making it one of the most challenging railway endeavors undertaken in India.
The engineering marvel of this railway line includes the Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge, which stands as a testament to India's prowess in infrastructure development. The line also features the Banihal Tunnel, ensuring smooth year-round operations despite the region's challenging topography and climate.
The commissioning ceremony witnessed participation from top government officials, railway authorities, and local leaders, celebrating the project’s completion. The initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of regional integration, development, and economic growth, strengthening Jammu and Kashmir’s connectivity with the rest of the country.
As the first trains begin operations on the Jammu–Srinagar route, the project promises to be a game-changer for residents, traders, and tourists, making travel more convenient and fostering economic opportunities in the valley. The completion of this railway line stands as a landmark achievement in India's infrastructure development, paving the way for a new era of progress and integration for Jammu and Kashmir.
