2026 - Pujya Mata Sahib Hasi Devi | Commemorative Coin

A commemorative coin of ₹200 will be issued to mark the 200th Birth Anniversary of Pujya Mata Sahib Hasi Devi. The Ministry of Finance has issued the gazette notification on July 9, 2026.

Param Pujniya Mata Sahib Hassi Devi was one of the most revered spiritual leaders of the Shadani Darbar, a prominent Hindu religious institution in Sindh. Renowned for her piety, compassion, and unwavering devotion to God, she dedicated her life to prayer, service, and the welfare of devotees. Her leadership strengthened the spiritual traditions of the Shadani Darbar, and she continues to be remembered with profound reverence by followers of the Shadani tradition.

Mata Sahib Hassi Devi was born in 1826 at Khanpur Mehar in Sindh, now in Pakistan. She was married to Sant Tansukhram Sahib in 1846 and, following his passing, assumed the Gaddi (spiritual seat) of the Shadani Darbar in 1852. From that time onwards, she devoted herself to the administration of the Darbar, offering daily prayers, rendering bhajans, and serving the large number of devotees who visited the sacred institution.

She was widely admired for her purity of character, humility, and dedication to selfless service. Under her guidance, the Shadani Darbar became a centre of faith, devotion, and charity, where all visitors were welcomed without distinction. Her compassionate nature and steadfast commitment to serving humanity earned her immense respect among her followers.

Among the many traditions associated with Mata Sahib Hassi Devi is an account from a severe famine that afflicted Sindh. According to the Shadani tradition, she prayed for divine mercy and placed a bag of wheat inside an iron vessel, instructing the sewadars to draw grain only through a small opening without lifting the lid. It is believed that the vessel continued to provide sufficient wheat for nearly six months, enabling the Darbar to feed countless hungry visitors, while the supply remained undiminished. The tradition further recounts that when a sewadar eventually opened the vessel out of curiosity, the miraculous supply ceased. This episode is remembered by devotees as an example of her divine grace and unwavering faith.

Another well-known incident occurred in 1856 during the construction of the Darbar Sahib at Hayat Pitafi. Building materials had been temporarily placed on the adjoining street when the Collector of Shikarpur, Mr. Brown, visited the site and ordered their immediate removal. On learning of the incident, Mata Sahib Hassi Devi is believed to have expressed her displeasure at the Collector's conduct. According to tradition, Mr. Brown met with an accident later that day, suffering serious injuries after falling from his horse. Realising the gravity of his actions, he visited the Shadani Darbar, sought forgiveness from Mata Sahib, and received her blessings for a speedy recovery. This incident continues to be remembered in the Shadani tradition as a testament to her spiritual authority and compassionate nature.

During her long stewardship of the Shadani Darbar, Mata Sahib Hassi Devi was assisted by Sant Manglaram Sahib, whose sincere and selfless service earned her admiration. Recognising his devotion and capability, she entrusted him with the Gaddi of the Shadani Darbar on 30 April 1909. Soon thereafter, she departed for her heavenly abode, leaving behind a legacy of faith, charity, humility, and spiritual leadership that continues to inspire devotees across generations.
