2015 - Swami Chinmayananda | Commemorative Coin

The 4th commemorative coin for the year 2015 was released on occasion of the Birth Centenary of Swami Chinmayananda.

Swami Chinmayananda Saraswati (born Balakrishna Menon; 8 May 1916 – 3 August 1993) was a revered Hindu spiritual leader and teacher, recognized for inspiring the establishment of Chinmaya Mission, a global nonprofit organization dedicated to disseminating the wisdom of Advaita Vedanta. This philosophical system, rooted in the Upanishads, embodies the profound teachings of the Vedas.

Chinmayananda gained acclaim for his profound teachings on the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads, and other ancient Hindu scriptures. From 1951 onward, he played a pivotal role in initiating a worldwide Hindu spiritual and cultural renaissance, making the esoteric scriptural texts more accessible by teaching them in English throughout India and abroad.

In 1953, Chinmayananda laid the foundation for Chinmaya Mission, leading this spiritual, educational, and charitable organization that has expanded to encompass over 300 centers globally. He authored 95 publications, including insightful commentaries on major Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. As a visiting professor of Indian philosophy, he shared his knowledge at numerous American and Asian universities, conducting university lecture tours worldwide.

Even after his passing on 3 August 1993, Swami Chinmayananda's legacy endures through the continued impact of his Vedantic teachings, publications, centers, ashrams, temples, and social service projects. His work continues to provide cultural and spiritual guidance to the Hindu diaspora worldwide.
