2016 - Banaras Hindu University | Commemorative Coin
The 7th commemorative coin of 2016 was released to mark the Centenary Year of Banaras Hindu University. This release also represented the first instance of a coin being released in honour of a university.
Banaras Hindu University, founded in 1916 by the visionary educationist and nationalist leader Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, stands as one of India’s most prestigious centres of learning. Conceived at a time of profound socio-political transformation, the university emerged from Malaviya’s dream of building an institution that blended the best of ancient Indian knowledge systems with the modern ideals of scientific inquiry. Located in the sacred city of Varanasi, BHU was envisioned not merely as a place for academic pursuit but as a national institution dedicated to character-building, cultural revival, and service to society.
The establishment of the university marked a significant chapter in India’s intellectual history. Malaviya rallied national support, inspiring philanthropists, leaders, and the public to contribute towards the institution. With the passage of the Banaras Hindu University Act by the Imperial Legislative Council, the university became one of the first in India to be established by legislation, reflecting the scale of its ambition and the broad public movement behind it.
Over the decades, the university has grown into one of Asia’s largest residential universities, housing numerous institutes, faculties, and centres covering the full spectrum of academic disciplines. From humanities and social sciences to engineering, medicine, agriculture, and performing arts, BHU has consistently upheld a tradition of scholarly excellence. The university’s medical institution, the Institute of Medical Sciences, and its engineering and technology faculties have earned national distinction, while the Sanskrit Vidya Dharma Vijnan faculty has preserved some of the oldest traditions of Indian scholarship.
BHU's sprawling campus, enriched with lush greenery, temples, museums, and public spaces, reflects its holistic approach to education. It nurtures not only intellectual growth but also cultural, physical, and moral development. Generations of students have been shaped by its strong emphasis on discipline, values, and service—principles central to Malaviya’s philosophy.
Throughout its history, BHU has played an influential role in nation-building. Many of its alumni have distinguished themselves as leaders in politics, science, literature, administration, and social reform. The university has also remained deeply connected to India’s cultural heritage, hosting events and initiatives that celebrate the country’s traditions while embracing global perspectives.
Today, Banaras Hindu University stands as a living embodiment of Malaviya’s vision—a place where knowledge is pursued with dedication, where culture and modernity coexist, and where education serves as a transformative force. As it continues to expand its academic and research horizons, BHU remains a symbol of India’s educational aspirations and a beacon guiding future generations toward excellence and service to the nation.
