PM Modi Releases ₹200 Commemorative Coin on Paika Bidroha
The Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, released a ₹200 commemorative coin along with a postage stamp to mark the Bi-Centenary of the Paika Bidroha.
The event witnessed the presence of distinguished leaders including the Governor of Odisha, Shri Ganeshi Lal; the Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Naveen Patnaik; and Union Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, among others.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister noted that the total value of projects either inaugurated or for which foundation stones were laid during the occasion amounted to over ₹14,000 crore. He emphasized the Union Government’s vision to develop Eastern India as the gateway to South-East Asia. Shri Modi highlighted that IIT Bhubaneswar would play a pivotal role in accelerating Odisha’s industrial development by fostering technological advancement and generating employment opportunities for the youth.
He further announced the establishment of an Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Berhampur at an estimated cost of ₹1,600 crore. The Prime Minister said that several such institutions dedicated to education, science, and technology have been approved over the past four years, reflecting the Government’s commitment to making New India a global hub for modern technology and start-ups.
Shri Modi also outlined plans to expand healthcare infrastructure, enhance the road network, and strengthen oil and gas pipeline systems in the State. He shared that over 1,100 Health and Wellness Centres are being established under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, which would significantly transform healthcare delivery in Odisha.
Speaking on energy infrastructure, the Prime Minister noted that the Paradip–Hyderabad pipeline would create new opportunities for the youth and position Odisha as an emerging hub for petroleum products. He added that the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga Yojana is progressing rapidly to expand piped gas networks across Eastern India.
On the Paika Rebellion, the Prime Minister announced the establishment of the Bakshi Deenbandhu Chair at Utkal University, dedicated to research on nationalist movements including the historic Paika Bidroha. He also highlighted the importance of the newly developed Lalitgiri Archaeological Museum, which will showcase Odisha’s rich spiritual heritage, attract researchers, and boost tourism in the region.
Reiterating the Union Government’s commitment to Odisha’s holistic development, the Prime Minister concluded by acknowledging the cultural and historical significance of the Paika Rebellion.
This release marks the second commemorative coin unveiled on the day and the fourth coin issued in the year 2018, with the ‘First Flag Hoisting Day’ coin scheduled to be released later this week.
