New Possible Commemorative Coin: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

The Government of India is likely to issue a ₹150 commemorative coin to mark the occasion of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, often referred to as the "Iron Man of India," was a prominent leader in the Indian independence movement and played a crucial role in integrating various princely states into independent India. His contributions to the nation are immense, and his 150th birth anniversary will be indeed a momentous occasion.

Born on October 31, 1875, Patel's leadership, determination, and commitment to the unity of India are remembered and celebrated by millions. His efforts during the partition of India and the subsequent integration of princely states into the Indian Union were pivotal in shaping the modern political map of India.

In March 2024, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, launched the first season of "Swaraj" on the OTT platform Amazon Prime in Mumbai. During the event, the Minister also announced the release of a new 52-episode series titled "Sardar: The Game Changer," which was launched on Doordarshan on March 10, 2024, in commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Various events, seminars, and initiatives are likely being organised across the nation to honour his memory and reaffirm the commitment to the ideals he championed. It's a time not just for celebration, but also for introspection and rededication to the principles that Sardar Patel espoused.

In 1996, a commemorative coin featuring Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was issued with denominations of ₹100, ₹50, ₹10, and ₹2. This release didn't coincide with a specific occasion like a Birth Centenary or Anniversary, but occurred just a year after he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna. This gesture underscored the recognition of his remarkable contributions and achievements, honouring his legacy for generations to come.

The 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel falls on October 31, 2024. However, the release of the commemorative coin will only be confirmed after the issuance of a gazette notification from the Ministry of Finance.
