New Commemorative Coin: 75th Foundation Year of Central Silk Board

The Government of India will issue a commemorative coin with a denomination of ₹75 to celebrate the '75th Foundation Year of Central Silk Board'. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on September 18, 2024, confirming this coin.

The Central Silk Board (CSB) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, established in 1948 to promote the development of the silk industry in India. Its primary role includes research, development, and promotion of sericulture (silk farming), along with ensuring quality control and market support for silk products. CSB plays a key role in improving silk production techniques, providing support to silk farmers, and encouraging the export of Indian silk, thereby contributing to the growth of the textile sector in India.

The metal composition of the ₹75 coin will consist of a Quaternary Alloy, comprising 50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel, and 5% Zinc. The coin will weigh 35 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin's description is as follows.

Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “75” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.

Reverse: This face of the coin shall bear the logo of 75th Foundation Year of Central Silk Board in the centre of the coin. On the upper periphery of coin, the inscription “केंद्रीय रेशम बोर्ड” in Devanagari script shall be written on the left side and “CENTRAL SILK BOARD” in English shall be written on the right side of the coin. The year “1949-2024” in international numbers shall be written below the logo on the lower periphery of the coin.

The Central Silk Board (CSB) is set to celebrate its Platinum Jubilee at the Karnataka State Open University's Convocation Hall in Mysuru on September 20, 2024. The grand event will commemorate the 75 years of significant contributions to the silk industry in India and the CSB's role in revolutionizing sericulture across the country. Union Minister of Heavy Industries Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Shri Pabitra Margherita, Cabinet Minister V. Somanna, Dr. H.C. Mahadevappa, MP Shri Yaduveer Wadiyar, and other dignitaries will participate in the event.  The Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh will inaugurate the event that would have technical sessions on the National Silk Policy and other core topics related to sericulture at GKVK campus of the University of Agricultural Sciences in Bengaluru on September 21, 2024.
