PM Modi Releases ₹100 Coin on Dr. Bhupen Hazarika
The Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, released a ₹100 commemorative coin to mark the Birth Centenary of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. The ceremony took place today, on September 13, 2025, at the Veterinary College Playground in Khanapara, Guwahati.
Organized by the Government of Assam, the event featured a historic cultural programme, including a grand musical tribute where over 1,200 artists came together to sing 14 of Dr. Hazarika’s timeless compositions in unison — a performance lasting 18 minutes that was both moving and unforgettable.
On the occasion, the Prime Minister also unveiled a multilingual biography of Dr. Hazarika. The centenary celebrations included a series of cultural programmes, such as concerts, exhibitions, academic seminars, and film retrospectives, highlighting his immense contributions to Indian cinema, literature, and social justice.
The event was graced by the Chief Minister of Assam, Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma; the Governor of Assam, Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya and other dignitaries.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said that it is a remarkable day and this moment is truly precious. He shared that the performances, the enthusiasm, and the coordination he witnessed were deeply moving, and highlighted how the rhythm of Bhupen Da’s music resonated throughout the event. Quoting Bhupen Hazarika, he remarked that a few lines of his song kept echoing in his mind, expressing his heartfelt wish that the waves of Bhupen’s music continue to flow endlessly everywhere. He extended warm appreciation to all the artists who participated, noting that Assam’s spirit is such that every event here sets a new record, and today’s performances reflected outstanding preparation. He congratulated and commended all the performers.
The Prime Minister recalled that just a few days ago, on 8th September, the birth anniversary of Bhupen Hazarika Ji was observed. On that day, he expressed his sentiments through a dedicated article honoring Bhupen Da, and now he considered it a privilege to be part of the centenary birth anniversary celebrations. Shri Modi noted that Bhupen Da is fondly remembered as “Shudha Kantho,” emphasizing that this centenary year celebrates the voice that gave expression to the emotions of India, connected music with sensitivity, preserved the nation’s dreams through his compositions, and narrated the compassion of Mother India through the eternal flow of the Ganga.
Reflecting on Bhupen Da’s timeless legacy, Shri Modi said that his immortal compositions united India through their melodies and stirred generations with their depth. Though he is no longer physically among us, his songs and voice continue to resonate with India’s development journey and inspire it forward. The Prime Minister affirmed that the government is proudly commemorating this centenary year and taking Bhupen Hazarika Ji’s songs, messages, and life journey to every household. He also informed that Bhupen Hazarika’s biography was released at the event. Paying heartfelt tribute, Shri Modi extended his greetings to the people of Assam and to every Indian on the centenary birth anniversary of Bhupen Da.
This release marked the 20th commemorative coin of 2025, minted by the India Government Mint, Mumbai. The bookings for Proof and UNC sets are expected to open shortly on the India Government Mint’s website, to be updated under the current and upcoming bookings section.
