PM Modi to Release ₹100 Coin on Dr. Bhupen Hazarika

The Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, will release a ₹100 commemorative coin to mark the Birth Centenary of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. The ceremony will take place on September 13, 2025, at the Veterinary College Playground in Khanapara, Guwahati.

Organized by the Government of Assam, the event will feature a historic cultural programme, including a grand musical tribute where over 1,200 artists will come together to sing 14 of Dr. Hazarika’s timeless compositions in unison — a performance lasting 18 minutes that promises to be both moving and unforgettable.

Dr. Bhupen Hazarika was a legendary singer, lyricist, composer, and filmmaker from Assam, revered for his soulful melodies and evocative storytelling. Fondly known as the "Bard of the Brahmaputra," he used music as a powerful medium to promote humanity, unity, and social justice. His deep, resonant voice and poignant lyrics left a lasting impact on Indian music and cultural consciousness. Beyond his musical genius, Dr. Hazarika was also a distinguished poet, cultural icon, and public intellectual. His contributions extended into activism and politics, earning him numerous accolades, including the Bharat Ratna — India’s highest civilian honour.

On this occasion, the Prime Minister will also unveil a multilingual biography of Dr. Hazarika. The centenary celebrations will further include concerts, exhibitions, academic seminars, and film retrospectives, showcasing his immense contributions to Indian cinema, literature, and society.

The event will be graced by the Chief Minister of Assam, Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma; the Governor of Assam, Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya; and other dignitaries. According to the Chief Minister, the Prime Minister will be on a two-day visit to Assam on September 13 and 14, with the Bhupen Hazarika centenary celebrations forming the highlight of the first day.

On September 14, the focus will shift to key developmental initiatives. At Mangaldoi, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for the Darrang Medical College, along with a nursing college and a GNM school — a project worth ₹567 crore aimed at strengthening Assam’s medical infrastructure. He will also inaugurate the construction of a new bridge over the Brahmaputra connecting Narengi to Kuruwa, estimated at ₹1,200 crore, as well as launch the ambitious Guwahati Ring Road project, pegged at ₹4,500 crore.

This release should mark the 20th commemorative coin of 2025, with the Ministry of Finance confirming its issuance through a gazette notification dated August 5, 2025. Additionally, several more commemorative coin releases are expected this year, as outlined in the upcoming and possibility section.
