Smt. Purnima Chakraborty Unveils ₹100 Coin on Mahanayak Uttam Kumar

The Hon’ble Minister of State for Information and Cultural Affairs, Smt. Purnima Chakraborty, unveiled the ₹100 commemorative coin to mark the Centenary Celebration of Mahanayak Uttam Kumar on September 6, 2026, at Shishir Mancha, Kolkata.

The ceremony was attended by prominent personalities from the Bengali film industry and cultural sphere, including Smt. Rupa Ganguly, Shri Biswajit Chattopadhyay, Shri Prosenjit Chattopadhyay, Padma Shri Saroj Mandal and others. The gathering reflected the deep respect and affection that Uttam Kumar continues to command across generations.

The commemorative coin, issued by the Government of India, pays tribute to one of the most iconic and beloved figures in the history of Bengali cinema. Uttam Kumar, popularly known as the “Mahanayak”, was born on September 3, 1926, and his remarkable career, charismatic screen presence and unforgettable performances made him an enduring cultural icon. The centenary celebrations provided an opportunity to remember not only his contribution to cinema but also the extraordinary place he continues to occupy in the cultural memory of Bengal.

The release formed part of a larger four-day celebration organised to commemorate Uttam Kumar’s birth centenary. The celebrations brought together the film fraternity, admirers and members of Uttam Kumar’s family through film screenings, exhibitions, seminars, cultural programmes and tributes. Special programmes explored different aspects of his extraordinary career and his lasting influence on generations of actors and filmmakers.

The centenary celebrations also witnessed initiatives aimed at preserving and promoting his legacy, including the proposed Uttam Kumar Film Centre at New Town, for which the foundation stone was laid during the celebrations. The centre is envisioned as a major cultural and cinematic facility with theatres, an auditorium, animation and VFX laboratories and post-production facilities.

This release marks the 11th commemorative coin of the year 2026, minted by the India Government Mint, Kolkata. The bookings for the Proof and UNC sets are expected to open soon on the official India Government Mint website and will be updated under the current and upcoming bookings section.

The Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, released the ₹100  commemorative coin  to mark the Centenary Year of Shri Ram College of Commerce  (SRCC), University of Delhi, today, on September 5, 2026, during his participation at the college campus in New Delhi, coinciding with Teachers' Day.
