New Commemorative Coin: 250th Janmotsava of Sri Muttusvami Diksita

The Government of India will issue a ₹250 commemorative coin to mark the 250th Janmotsava of Sri Muttusvami Diksita. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on October 30, 2026, confirming this coin.

Sri Muttusvami Diksita (1775–1835) was one of the greatest composers of Carnatic music and a distinguished member of the Carnatic Trinity, alongside Sri Tyagaraja and Sri Syama Sastri. Born at Tiruvarur, he was renowned for his profound knowledge of Sanskrit, music and spirituality. His compositions are celebrated for their intricate melodic structures, rich Sanskrit lyrics and detailed references to Hindu temples, deities and mythology. He travelled extensively across South India and composed numerous kritis dedicated to the deities of the temples he visited. His compositions, often bearing the signature “Guruguha,” continue to occupy an important place in the Carnatic music tradition and represent a remarkable synthesis of music, devotion and scholarship.

The metal composition of the ₹250 coin will consist of a Quaternary Alloy, comprising 50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel, and 5% Zinc. The coin will weigh 35 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin's description is as follows.

Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “250” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.

Reverse: This face of the coin shall bear the image of Śrī Muttusvāmi Dīkṣita at the centre of the coin. The inscription “श्री मुत्तुस्वामि दीक्षित की 250 वीं जयंती” in Devanagari script shall be inscribed on the upper periphery of the coin and the inscription “250th Janmotsava of Śrī Muttusvāmi Dīkṣita” in English shall be depicted on the lower periphery of the coin. The year “2026” in international numerals shall be inscribed below the image of Śrī Muttusvāmi Dīkṣita.

This will be the second commemorative coin dedicated to Carnatic music after Dr. M.S. Subbulakshmi, while also adding Sri Muttusvami Diksita to the broader series of coins honouring legendary Indian musicians, including Begum Akhtar, Mohammed Rafi and Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.

This commemorative coin honours Sri Muttusvami Diksita’s enduring contribution to Carnatic music and his place among the revered Carnatic Trinity. His profound knowledge of music, Sanskrit and spirituality, along with his extensive body of compositions dedicated to deities and sacred temples across India, represents a remarkable legacy of musical and cultural heritage. His compositions continue to be an integral part of the Carnatic music tradition and are performed by musicians and appreciated by audiences across generations.
