Finance Minister to Release ₹250 Coin Honouring Śrī Muttusvāmi Dīkṣita
The Hon’ble Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, will release a ₹250 commemorative coin marking the 250th Janmotsava of Śrī Muttusvāmi Dīkṣita on November 3, 2026, at Swatantrata Bhavan, Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi.
The event, titled “Amara Guruguha – A 250 Year Commemoration of Śrī Muttusvāmi Dīkṣita,” is being organised to commemorate the life, musical legacy and enduring contribution of the renowned Carnatic composer.
Śrī Muttusvāmi Dīkṣita (1775–1835) occupies a distinguished place in the history of Indian classical music and is one of the celebrated members of the Carnatic Music Trinity, alongside Śrī Tyāgarāja and Śrī Śyāma Śāstri. A composer, vocalist and veena player, he enriched the Carnatic tradition through compositions noted for their musical depth, Sanskrit scholarship and devotional content.
Dīkṣita’s compositions are particularly distinguished by their extensive treatment of rāgas, intricate musical forms and references to temples and deities. His compositions cover a wide range of sacred subjects and places, reflecting his travels and deep engagement with India’s religious and cultural traditions. The signature “Guruguha,” which appears in many of his compositions, is closely associated with his musical identity.
The 250th birth anniversary commemoration provides an opportunity to recognise not only Dīkṣita’s contribution to Carnatic music but also the wider cultural heritage preserved through his compositions. His works continue to form an important part of the repertoire of Carnatic musicians and remain an enduring link between India’s musical, literary and spiritual traditions.
The official gazette notification for the ₹250 coin was issued on October 30, 2026, confirming its issuance by the Ministry of Finance. The release is expected to mark the 17th commemorative coin of 2026, reportedly to be minted by the India Government Mint, Kolkata.
From a numismatic perspective, this will be the fourth ₹250 coin issued, first introduced for the 250th Session of the Rajya Sabha in 2019, followed by the 250th Birth Anniversary of Raja Ram Mohan Roy in 2023 and 250 Years of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in 2024. The commemorative coin honouring Śrī Muttusvāmi Dīkṣita will therefore add another distinctive theme to this relatively limited ₹250 denomination series.
