2023 - 120th Anniversary of Hyderabad Mint | Mint Souvenir Token

The India Government Mint, Hyderabad, released a commemorative souvenir token to mark the 120th Anniversary of the Saifabad Mint, Hyderabad.

The Saifabad Mint in Hyderabad holds an important place in the history of coin production in the erstwhile Hyderabad State. Located in the Saifabad area of Hyderabad, the mint was established to meet the growing requirements of the Nizam's government for the production of coins and other related items.

The history of the mint dates back to the early 20th century. The Saifabad Mint was established in 1903 during the reign of Nizam Mahbub Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VI. It replaced earlier minting arrangements and became the principal centre for the production of coins for the Hyderabad State.

The mint produced the distinctive Hyderabadi coinage, issued in the name of the Nizam. Hyderabad maintained its own monetary system for many years, with coins bearing legends and designs reflecting the authority and traditions of the princely state. The mint produced various denominations in metals such as gold, silver, copper, and other base metals.

Among the notable Hyderabad coinage are the Osmania Sicca issues, which formed an important part of the monetary history of the state. The coins provide valuable evidence of Hyderabad's political, economic, and cultural history during the period of the Nizams.

Following the integration of Hyderabad into the Indian Union in 1948, the monetary system of the former princely state was gradually brought into alignment with the currency system of the Republic of India. The Saifabad Mint subsequently became part of the Government of India's minting establishment.
