2023 - Raksha Bandhan Type 1 (Kolkata Mint) | Mint Souvenir Token

The India Government Mint, Kolkata, issued souvenir tokens in 2023 to mark the auspicious occasion of the Raksha Bandhan festival. As multiple designs were issued on the same theme, this has been classified as Type 1.

Raksha Bandhan is one of the cherished festivals of India, celebrating the special bond of love, affection and mutual care between brothers and sisters. The festival is observed on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Hindu month of Shravana, usually falling in August.

On this occasion, sisters traditionally prepare a ceremonial thali containing the Rakhi, kumkum, rice, sweets and a lamp. The ceremony often includes applying a tilak on the brother’s forehead, performing an aarti and offering sweets after the Rakhi is tied.
