2024 - Lokmata Rani Rashmoni | Mint Souvenir Token

The India Government Mint, Kolkata, issued a commemorative souvenir token in 2024 to celebrate the 232nd Birth Anniversary of Lokmata Rani Rashmoni.

The Lokmata Rani Rashmoni was one of the most remarkable women of nineteenth-century Bengal, remembered for her philanthropy, social service, religious devotion and courage. Born on September 28, 1793, in a humble family, she rose to prominence after her marriage to Rajachandra Das, a wealthy zamindar of Janbazar, Kolkata. Following her husband's death, she took charge of the family estate and demonstrated exceptional administrative ability and determination.

The Rani Rashmoni was deeply committed to the welfare of ordinary people. She supported the poor and needy, undertook charitable activities and contributed to the construction and maintenance of roads, bathing ghats and other public facilities. Her philanthropic work extended to pilgrims and travellers, for whom she provided facilities along important routes.

The Rani Rashmoni is particularly remembered for establishing the Dakshineswar Kali Temple on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River near Kolkata. The temple complex, dedicated to Goddess Kali, was consecrated in 1855 and subsequently became closely associated with Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, who served as its priest. The temple later developed into an important centre of spiritual and cultural significance.

The Rani Rashmoni was also known for standing up against injustice and policies that affected the lives and livelihoods of common people. Her determination to protect the interests of fishermen and others dependent on the Ganges demonstrated her willingness to challenge powerful authorities when she believed that justice was at stake.

The Rani Rashmoni's life represents a remarkable combination of leadership, philanthropy, devotion and social responsibility. Her contributions left a lasting impression on the history and cultural heritage of Bengal. The Dakshineswar Kali Temple continues to stand as one of the enduring monuments associated with her legacy.
