2023 - Dhanteras | Mint Souvenir Token

The India Government Mint, Kolkata, issued the gold and silver souvenir tokens to mark the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras.

Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, is an important Hindu festival that marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali celebrations. It is observed on the Trayodashi Tithi, the thirteenth day of the dark fortnight of the Hindu month of Kartika.

The word Dhanteras is derived from Dhan, meaning wealth, and Teras, referring to the thirteenth lunar day. The festival is traditionally associated with wealth, prosperity, good fortune and well-being. Homes and business premises are cleaned and decorated, and lamps are lit to welcome prosperity and happiness.

According to Hindu tradition, Dhanteras is associated with Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician and embodiment of Ayurveda. It is believed that Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the cosmic ocean during the churning of the ocean, carrying the sacred vessel of Amrita, the nectar of immortality.

The festival is also closely associated with Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Devotees worship Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha during the Diwali season and seek blessings for abundance, success and a prosperous year ahead.

A popular tradition on Dhanteras is the purchase of gold, silver, jewellery, utensils and other valuable items. Many people consider acquiring precious metals on this auspicious day to bring prosperity and good fortune. In several regions, special prayers and Lakshmi Puja are performed in the evening.

Another important tradition is the lighting of Yama Deepam, a lamp dedicated to Lord Yama. The lamp is traditionally placed outside the home as a symbolic prayer for protection and the well-being of family members.
