2025 - Diamond Jubilee of BITS Pilani | Commemorative Coin
The 7th commemorative coin of 2025 was released to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani.
Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, widely known as BITS Pilani, is one of India’s most prestigious and forward-looking institutions for higher education in science, engineering, and technology. Its origins trace back to the early 20th century, when the Birla family began establishing schools and colleges in Pilani with a vision to foster modern education in a largely rural setting. These individual institutions were later amalgamated, and in 1964 BITS Pilani took shape as a comprehensive university, conceived with the support of the Ford Foundation and guided by an academic structure inspired by leading global universities. From its inception, the institute aspired to provide world-class education rooted in innovation, scientific thinking, and technological advancement.
Over the decades, BITS Pilani became synonymous with academic excellence, merit-based admissions, and a strong emphasis on research. Its distinctive educational model introduced several pioneering concepts in India, including the Practice School programme, which integrated industrial training into the curriculum by placing students in real-world corporate environments. The institute’s flexible academic structure, with its course-based system, continuous evaluation, and emphasis on student autonomy, cultivated an environment where learning extended beyond traditional classroom boundaries. This approach nurtured analytical skills, creativity, and entrepreneurial thinking among students.
The Pilani campus evolved into a vibrant innovation hub, home to state-of-the-art laboratories, advanced research centres, and a strong culture of student-led initiatives. BITS Pilani gradually expanded beyond Pilani, establishing campuses in Goa, Hyderabad, and Dubai, each committed to the same academic philosophy and standards. This multi-campus system enabled greater diversity, interdisciplinary collaboration, and access to a wider ecosystem of industries and research organisations.
Research became an increasingly important pillar of the institute’s identity. Faculty and students engaged in cutting-edge work in areas such as material science, biotechnology, renewable energy, computer science, and engineering design. Collaborations with international universities, government agencies, and private industries strengthened BITS Pilani’s position as a centre of scientific and technological inquiry. The institute’s focus on innovation also encouraged the growth of start-ups and entrepreneurial ventures, many of which were founded by its alumni who later emerged as leaders in technology, industry, academia, and public service.
BITS Pilani’s campus life, known for its freedom, cultural vibrancy, and student governance, played a pivotal role in shaping well-rounded graduates. Festivals such as Oasis, APOGEE, and BOSM became iconic events, blending creativity, technical talent, and sportsmanship. The supportive environment encouraged students to explore diverse interests, build strong communities, and develop leadership skills.
Today, BITS Pilani continues to uphold its legacy as an institution driven by excellence, independence, and innovation. It remains committed to advancing knowledge, fostering research, and empowering students to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving world. With its rich heritage, modern outlook, and global footprint, BITS Pilani stands as a symbol of India’s aspirations in science and technology education, continuing to influence generations of learners and leaders.
