2026 - HLL Lifecare Limited | Commemorative Coin

commemorative coin of ₹60 will be issued to mark the Diamond Jubilee of HLL Lifecare Limited. The Ministry of Finance has issued the gazette notification on April 29, 2026.

HLL Lifecare Limited is one of India’s important public sector enterprises in the healthcare sector, known for its longstanding contribution to public health programmes, affordable medical products, and healthcare infrastructure development across the country. Established in 1966 as Hindustan Latex Limited, the organisation was originally created with the objective of supporting the National Family Planning Programme by manufacturing quality condoms for widespread distribution. Over the decades, it gradually expanded beyond its initial mandate and evolved into a diversified healthcare solutions provider serving both domestic and international markets.

Headquartered in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, the company operates under the administrative control of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, and holds the status of a Mini Ratna Central Public Sector Enterprise. From its modest beginnings as a contraceptive manufacturing unit, it steadily broadened its portfolio to include hospital products, pharmaceuticals, diagnostic services, blood bags, surgical sutures, vaccines, and personal hygiene products, thereby positioning itself as a comprehensive healthcare service provider with a strong public welfare orientation.

One of the most notable contributions of HLL Lifecare Limited has been its role in strengthening reproductive healthcare accessibility across India. The company manufactured widely distributed contraceptive products under national programmes and introduced innovations such as “Saheli,” the world’s first non-hormonal oral contraceptive pill taken weekly, which represented a significant advancement in women’s reproductive health options. Through such initiatives, the organisation played a vital role in promoting maternal health, population stabilisation efforts, and preventive healthcare awareness, especially in rural and underserved regions.

Over time, HLL transformed itself into a broader healthcare delivery institution by establishing diagnostic networks, retail pharmacy chains, and infrastructure consultancy services. Through initiatives such as AMRIT pharmacies, the company contributed to improving the affordability of medicines for patients suffering from serious illnesses like cancer and cardiovascular diseases, often providing treatment support at significantly reduced prices compared to market rates. The organisation also manages diagnostic centres, imaging facilities, and laboratory services in partnership with various state governments to strengthen public hospital infrastructure and service delivery systems.

The company’s presence extends beyond manufacturing and retail healthcare services into infrastructure development and procurement consultancy for hospitals and public health institutions. Through its subsidiary and associated service divisions, it has supported the establishment of healthcare facilities, managed supply chains, and provided technical expertise for medical equipment procurement, thereby assisting governments in improving healthcare delivery capacity across multiple regions. This integrated approach has helped position the organisation as a strategic partner in national health missions and institutional healthcare expansion initiatives.

Internationally, HLL Lifecare Limited has established its footprint in more than one hundred countries through exports and collaborative healthcare initiatives, reflecting its transition from a domestic public sector manufacturer to a globally recognised healthcare solutions provider. Its manufacturing facilities located across several Indian states support a wide range of products that cater to both government programmes and private sector demand, reinforcing its role as a reliable supplier in critical health segments such as contraceptives, diagnostics, and hospital consumables.

In addition to its commercial and manufacturing activities, the organisation has contributed significantly to social responsibility programmes aimed at improving community health awareness, skill development, and inclusive healthcare access. Its initiatives have addressed the needs of vulnerable groups and supported national campaigns promoting preventive healthcare, reproductive health education, and affordable treatment accessibility, thereby strengthening its identity as a socially oriented public enterprise rather than a purely profit-driven organisation.

In recent years, HLL Lifecare Limited has continued expanding its retail pharmacy network and healthcare outreach initiatives to enhance accessibility to essential medicines across India. Its involvement in supplying medicines internationally, including collaborations with neighbouring countries, further demonstrates its growing importance as a regional healthcare partner supporting public health systems beyond national boundaries.

Today, after nearly six decades of service, HLL Lifecare Limited stands as a significant contributor to India’s public health ecosystem, combining manufacturing capability, service delivery infrastructure, and social healthcare initiatives into a unified institutional framework. Its evolution from a specialised contraceptive manufacturer into a comprehensive healthcare solutions organisation reflects both the changing priorities of India’s healthcare sector and the continuing relevance of public sector enterprises in supporting accessible and affordable medical services for large sections of the population.
