Karpoor Chandra Kulish was one of India’s most respected journalists and the visionary founder of the Hindi daily Rajasthan Patrika. Born on March 20, 1926 in Rajasthan, Kulish emerged from humble beginnings to become a pioneering force in Indian journalism. His life story is one of determination, intellectual depth, and an unwavering commitment to fearless reporting.
Kulish began his career as a school teacher before turning to journalism, driven by a passion to give voice to the concerns of ordinary people. In 1956, he founded Rajasthan Patrika with limited resources but immense conviction. What started as a modest publication gradually evolved into one of India’s most influential Hindi newspapers, known for its credibility, investigative reporting, and strong editorial values. Under his leadership, the newspaper maintained independence from political and corporate pressures, earning widespread trust among readers.
He was deeply committed to ethical journalism and believed that the press should serve as a watchdog of democracy. Kulish’s editorials were widely read for their clarity, moral strength, and balanced perspective. He consistently advocated transparency in governance and social justice, ensuring that journalism remained a public service rather than merely a commercial enterprise.
Beyond journalism, Kulish was also a thinker and scholar with a keen interest in Indian philosophy and culture. He undertook extensive studies of the Vedas and authored works that reflected his spiritual and intellectual pursuits. His efforts to promote cultural awareness and values-based thinking complemented his journalistic mission of social responsibility.
In recognition of his immense contribution to journalism and society, he was honoured with the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. These awards acknowledged not only his professional achievements but also his role in strengthening democratic discourse through the power of the press.
Karpoor Chandra Kulish’s legacy continues through Rajasthan Patrika and the ideals he championed—truth, integrity, and fearless expression. His life remains an inspiration for journalists and media professionals across the country, reminding them that the strength of journalism lies in its courage to stand with the people and uphold the values of democracy.
