2023 - National Defence Academy | Commemorative Coin

The 15th commemorative coin of 2023 was released to mark the Platinum Jubilee Celebration of National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Pune.

The National Defence Academy (NDA) stands as one of India’s most prestigious institutions, renowned for shaping generations of officers who have gone on to serve with distinction in the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. Established in 1954 at Khadakwasla near Pune, the NDA is the world’s first tri-services academy where cadets of all three armed forces train together before proceeding to their respective service academies for specialized instruction. This unique model fosters a spirit of camaraderie, jointmanship, and mutual respect—qualities essential for modern military leadership.

The creation of the NDA has its origins in the post-World War II period, when the need for unified training was strongly felt. Inspired by the sacrifices of Indian soldiers during the war and motivated by the vision of strengthening national security, the academy was envisioned as a cradle of excellence for future military leaders. Over the decades, it has grown into an institution of national pride, known for its rigorous training, academic discipline, and emphasis on character-building.

Life at the NDA is both demanding and transformative. Cadets undergo comprehensive training that blends physical conditioning, education, leadership development, and outdoor activities. From early-morning drills and sports to classroom learning and tactical exercises, every aspect of the curriculum is designed to cultivate discipline, resilience, teamwork, and a strong sense of duty. The academy offers a full-fledged academic program affiliated with Jawaharlal Nehru University, ensuring that cadets receive a balanced military and academic education.

The sprawling campus at Khadakwasla, surrounded by hills and lakes, provides an inspiring environment that complements the rigorous schedule. Iconic landmarks such as the Sudan Block—the main administrative building gifted by the people of Sudan in gratitude for Indian soldiers’ contributions during World War II—symbolize the academy’s legacy and global recognition.

NDA alumni have played pivotal roles in safeguarding India’s sovereignty and contributing to global peacekeeping efforts. Many have risen to the highest ranks, including service chiefs, decorated war heroes, and distinguished commanders who have led with valor and integrity. The academy’s ethos of “Seva Paramo Dharma” (Service Before Self) continues to guide its cadets and graduates throughout their careers.

Beyond producing military leaders, the NDA has come to represent the ideals of national service, unity, and excellence. Its emphasis on joint training prepares officers for the complex, interconnected challenges of contemporary defence operations, where coordination among the three services is crucial. The institution stands as a living symbol of India’s commitment to building a strong, professional, and cohesive armed force.

Through its enduring traditions, high standards, and unmatched legacy, the National Defence Academy remains a pillar of India’s defence preparedness and a beacon for young aspirants who dream of serving the nation with honor, courage, and dedication.
