The India Government Mint, Mumbai, issued a coloured souvenir token in the Panchatantra Series in 2022, featuring the famous tale “The Monkey and the Crocodile.” This marked the first coloured souvenir token from the Mumbai Mint in the series, following the earlier two tokens issued by the India Government Mint, Kolkata.

The Panchatantra is one of India's most celebrated collections of ancient animal fables, traditionally attributed to Vishnu Sharma. Rather than simply presenting moral lessons, the tales explore situations involving friendship, conflict, deception, decision-making, and the consequences of one's actions.

One of the best-known Panchatantra stories is “The Monkey and the Crocodile.” The story illustrates the importance of intelligence, presence of mind, and friendship, particularly when faced with danger.

The story tells of a monkey who lived on a fruit-laden tree beside a river. A crocodile that lived in the river became friendly with the monkey, and the monkey regularly shared delicious fruits from the tree with him. The crocodile began taking the fruits home to his wife.

The crocodile's wife, having tasted the sweet fruits, became curious about the monkey and imagined that the monkey's heart must be equally sweet. She insisted that her husband bring the monkey home so that she could eat his heart. Although the crocodile was reluctant to betray his friend, he eventually agreed to take the monkey across the river. While they were in the middle of the river, the crocodile revealed his wife's intention. The monkey realised the danger but remained calm and quickly devised a plan. He told the crocodile that he had left his heart on the fruit tree and asked to be taken back so that he could retrieve it.

The unsuspecting crocodile returned to the tree. As soon as they reached the riverbank, the monkey swiftly climbed to safety. He then explained that no living creature could leave its heart behind and warned the crocodile against such treachery.

The story's central message is that presence of mind and intelligence can overcome danger, even when one is physically weaker. It also highlights the importance of being cautious when trust is betrayed and demonstrates how quick thinking can help overcome seemingly impossible situations.
