One Rupee Currency Note with Year 2017 Announced

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is set to issue the new ₹1 currency note bearing the year 2017 into circulation. The new notes, printed by the Government of India, will feature the ₹ symbol and carry the signature of Shri Shaktikanta Das, Secretary, Ministry of Finance.

According to the Reserve Bank of India, the new ₹1 notes will be predominantly pink and green on both the obverse and reverse, along with other colours. The notes will retain the distinctive features associated with the ₹1 denomination while incorporating the ₹ symbol in their design.

The printing of ₹1 currency notes was discontinued in 1994. However, the denomination was re-introduced in 2015, marking the return of the Government of India's ₹1 currency note after a gap of more than two decades. Unlike other banknotes issued by the Reserve Bank of India, the ₹1 note is issued by the Government of India and bears the signature of the Secretary, Ministry of Finance.

The new ₹1 notes will bear the signature of Shri Shaktikanta Das, Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance. This makes the notes particularly interesting from a numismatic perspective, as the signature of the Finance Ministry Secretary appears on the note instead of that of the RBI Governor.

The numbering on the new ₹1 notes will be printed in black on the lower right portion of the obverse. On the reverse, the year “2017” is featured below and within a representation of a ₹1 coin, incorporating the rupee symbol and a floral design. The surrounding design depicts Sagar Samrat, the oil exploration platform, highlighting India's development in offshore oil exploration. The overall design follows the format used on the ₹1 notes issued in 2015 and 2016.

The ₹1 note continues to occupy a unique position in India's currency system. While other denominations are issued by the Reserve Bank of India and carry the signature of the RBI Governor, the ₹1 note remains a Government of India issue and bears the signature of the Secretary, Ministry of Finance.
