New Commemorative Coin: 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi

The Government of India is preparing to mark the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with nationwide and international celebrations, reflecting the enduring influence of the Father of the Nation. This milestone offers an opportunity to honor Gandhiji’s life, philosophy, and transformative role in shaping modern India.

As part of the commemorative initiatives, the government is planning to issue a ₹150 silver coin in recognition of this historic anniversary. Unlike standard silver coins, which typically weigh 35 grams and consist of a silver-copper-nickel-zinc alloy, the proposed coin is expected to be struck in pure silver, weighing 40 grams.

A high-level panel, led by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has outlined plans to transform the 150th birth anniversary into a global celebration of Gandhiji’s life and ideals. The panel aims to create awareness not only within India but also internationally, highlighting Gandhiji’s principles of truth, non-violence, equality, and social justice. Events are expected to include exhibitions, seminars, cultural programs, educational initiatives, and special commemorative releases to inspire people across generations.

The coin is envisioned as more than just a collectible; it is a symbol of Gandhiji’s timeless message. Its design will likely reflect his life, teachings, or iconic imagery associated with him, ensuring that the coin itself becomes a reminder of his enduring influence. For collectors, this issuance will be particularly significant as it marks a first-of-its-kind denomination in Indian numismatic history.

Through these celebrations, India seeks to perpetuate Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy in a manner that resonates globally. The 150th anniversary serves as a moment not only to reflect on India’s struggle for independence but also to inspire citizens and international audiences to uphold Gandhiji’s values of peace, tolerance, and moral courage.

This commemorative coin will serve as both a numismatic treasure and a tribute to Gandhiji’s legacy, appealing to collectors and enthusiasts alike. The enhanced weight and purity of the coin are symbolic of the significance of the occasion, underscoring the respect and reverence accorded to Mahatma Gandhi worldwide.
