Rs 125 coin of PC Mahalonobis on the Statistics Day

The Vice President, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, is scheduled to release a commemorative coin of Rs 125 and a circulation coin of Rs 5 denomination on the occasion of Statistics Day and the 125th Birth Anniversary of P.C. Mahalanobis on Friday. In an official statement, it was mentioned that Naidu will unveil these coins as a mark of respect to the statistical genius, P.C. Mahalanobis.

The Government of India, in 2007, officially designated June 29th as Statistics Day, categorizing it as a special day to be celebrated annually at the national level.

This day aims to enhance public awareness regarding the crucial role of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation while also recognizing the significant contributions of Mahalanobis.

The theme for Statistics Day this year revolves around 'Quality Assurance in Official Statistics.' Both the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation and the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) are set to host an event on June 29 in Kolkata to commemorate Statistics Day, as stated by a ministry release. Notably, ISI was founded by Mahalanobis in 1931.

In an earlier post in April, there was speculation on the release of a commemorative coin dedicated to P.C. Mahalanobis on this blog.
