TN Chief Minister Releases MGR Commemorative Coin

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Shri K. Palaniswami, and Deputy Chief Minister, Shri O. Paneerselvam, along with other dignitaries, released commemorative coins of ₹100 and ₹5 today to mark the 102nd Birth Anniversary of former Chief Minister Dr. M.G. Ramachandran. The release event took place at the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University Complex, Chennai.


As part of the birth anniversary celebrations, a "Dr MGR Centenary Arch," spanning 66 feet in width and standing at a height of 52 feet, was unveiled. The arch is prominently located across the arterial Kamarajar road, adjacent to the renowned Marina beach in the city.

AIADMK workers, led by Puducherry secretary P Purushothaman and party MLAs A Anbalagan, A Baskar, and Vayyapuri Manikandan, paid homage with floral tributes at a statue of MGR situated at the party headquarters.

The day followed the customary observances, featuring portraits of MGR adorned with flowers positioned at street corners and the playing of songs from his movies at various locations in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.


The commemorative coin is minted by the India Government Mint, Mumbai, and this release marks the second commemorative coin for the year 2019, with several more expected to be issued. The 'Current and Upcoming Bookings' section will be updated once booking is started.
