ISRO Releases Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Commemorative Coin

The centenary celebrations marking the 100th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the eminent scientist regarded as the founding father of ISRO, were inaugurated in Ahmedabad on August 12, 2019. The event witnessed the presence of distinguished scientists and senior officials from the Indian Space Research Organisation. The Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, addressed the gathering through a video message, paying tribute to Dr. Sarabhai’s visionary contributions to India’s scientific advancement.

In his address, the Prime Minister highlighted how Dr. Sarabhai stepped forward to fill the immense void left by the untimely demise of Dr. Homi Bhabha, guiding India’s scientific community with renewed purpose. He emphasized Dr. Sarabhai’s exemplary leadership, foresight, and administrative brilliance, which played a pivotal role in advancing India’s nuclear and space programmes. Shri Modi expressed pride in how India’s rockets now reach the Moon and Mars—an achievement that continues to earn global admiration—and credited pioneers like Dr. Sarabhai for laying the foundation of such triumphs.

At the inaugural ceremony, several important releases were made to honor the legacy of Dr. Sarabhai. These included an illustrated album showcasing his life journey, a coffee table book on ISRO’s milestones, and a ₹100 commemorative coin issued by the Department of Atomic Energy. The coin marks a significant tribute to one of India’s most influential scientific minds.

The yearlong Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Centenary Programme will encompass a diverse range of activities, including science exhibitions, nationwide competitions for school students, journalism awards, thematic lectures, and outreach programmes. These events will be organized across 100 selected cities in India, beginning with Ahmedabad and concluding with a valedictory function in Thiruvananthapuram on August 12, 2020.

This release marks the fourth commemorative coin of 2019, minted by the India Government Mint, Kolkata. With several important national occasions lined up, more commemorative coin releases are expected in the months ahead.
