ISRO Releases Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Commemorative Coin

The centenary celebration of the birth anniversary of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the founding father of ISRO, commenced in Ahmedabad today with the presence of dignitaries from ISRO. The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, addressed the gathering through a video message.


The Prime Minister emphasized the significant role Dr. Sarabhai played in filling the void left by the demise of Dr. Homi Bhabha in the scientific world of India. He highlighted Dr. Sarabhai's leadership and efficiency, which brought new dimensions to India's nuclear and space programs. The Prime Minister expressed pride in India's achievements in space, with its rockets reaching the Moon and Mars, garnering global amazement and admiration.

During the inaugural program, an album depicting the life story of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, a coffee table book on ISRO, and a Rs 100 commemorative coin from the Department of Atomic Energy were released.

The Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Centenary Programme, spanning a year, will feature exhibitions, competitions for school children, journalism awards, and speeches by eminent personalities. The program will be conducted across 100 selected cities throughout India, starting today and concluding on August 12, 2020, with the valedictory function at Thiruvananthapuram.

This release signifies the fourth commemorative coin for the year 2019, with expectations of several more being issued in the coming months.
