Shaktikanta Das Reappointed as RBI Governor for Three Years

The Government of India has reappointed Shri Shaktikanta Das as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a further period of three years, as per the official order issued on October 28, 2021.

The official order stated that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet had approved the reappointment of Shri Shaktikanta Das as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India for a period of three years beyond December 10, 2021, or until further orders, whichever was earlier. The committee is headed by the Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

Shri Shaktikanta Das had originally assumed charge as the 25th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India on December 12, 2018, succeeding Dr. Urjit R. Patel. His initial term was for three years, and with this decision, he will continue to lead the central bank for another three years.

The reappointment is notable as it provides continuity at the helm of the Reserve Bank of India at an important time for the Indian economy. The central bank continues to play a crucial role in supporting economic growth, maintaining financial stability, and managing monetary policy.

For numismatists, the reappointment of Shri Shaktikanta Das is particularly interesting because his association with Indian currency had begun even before he became RBI Governor. During his tenure as Secretary, Ministry of Finance, his bilingual signature appeared on the ₹1 currency note issued in 2017. Unlike other Indian banknotes issued by the Reserve Bank of India, the ₹1 note is issued by the Government of India and bears the signature of the Secretary, Ministry of Finance.

As RBI Governor, his signature can now be found on the ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100, ₹200 and ₹500 banknotes. This makes Shri Shaktikanta Das particularly significant from a numismatic perspective, as his signature appears on Indian currency in two different capacities—first as Secretary, Ministry of Finance, on the ₹1 note, and subsequently as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India on RBI-issued banknotes.

India has taken another significant step towards the possible introduction of polymer banknotes with Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Private Limited (BRBNMPL) issuing a Global Expression of Interest (EOI) on July, 17 2026 for the manufacture and supply of opacified polymer substrate sheets with advanced security features. Govt Clears RBI Pilot for ₹10 and ₹20 Polymer Banknotes

The Government of India has taken the first formal step towards the possible introduction of polymer banknotes after approving the Reserve Bank of India's proposal to conduct field trials of polymer-based ₹10 and ₹20 notes. The Ministry of Finance has authorised the RBI to print one billion pieces (one hundred crore) each of the ₹10 and ₹20 polymer banknotes for pilot circulation across selected regions of the country. The approval was confirmed by the Minister of State for Finance, Shri Pankaj Chaudhary, in a written reply to questions raised in the Lok Sabha.
