New Commemorative Coin: Muthuvel Karunanidhi
The Government of Tamil Nadu is celebrating the Birth Centenary of the late M. Karunanidhi, a former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and former president of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). As part of this celebration, plans are in place to release a commemorative coin with a denomination of ₹100.
Muthuvel Karunanidhi (3 June 1924 – 7 August 2018) was a prominent Indian writer and politician who held the position of Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for nearly two decades, spanning five terms between 1969 and 2011. He is affectionately known as "Kalaignar" (Artist) and "Mutthamizh Arignar" (Tamil Scholar) for his invaluable contributions to Tamil literature. Karunanidhi holds the distinction of having the longest tenure as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, serving for a total of 6,863 days. Additionally, he was a steadfast leader of the Dravidian movement and served as the president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam political party on ten different occasions. Remarkably, Karunanidhi never lost an election to the Tamil Nadu Assembly, securing victory 13 times since his initial triumph in 1957.
It has been reported that the Ministry of Finance has granted approval for the Government of Tamil Nadu's request to issue the commemorative coin. However, it is imperative to await the gazette notification from the Ministry of Finance for confirmation and detailed information regarding the issuance of the commemorative coin.
The Birth Centenary of M. Karunanidhi is scheduled for June 3, 2024, and there is a possibility that it might coincide with the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
