NTR Coin Sets Achieve Record Sales!

The India Government Mint, Hyderabad, achieved record sales with the commemorative coin of ₹100 issued on the occasion of the Birth Centennial Year of Shri Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, popularly known as NTR, unveiled by President Smt. Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi on August 28, 2023.

The Hyderabad Mint at Charlapally, the facility responsible for minting these coins, facilitated in-person sales at counters located at the Saifabad Mint and the IG Cherlapally.

The bookings commenced with a range of packages and variants, including the Folder and MDF Box, priced at ₹4,350 for the Proof Set in the Folder package, ₹4,050 for the UNC Set in the Folder package, and ₹4,850 for the Proof Set in the MDF Box.

It is noteworthy that the Hyderabad Mint introduced the NTR coins with the 'H' mintmark for the Proof Sets, deviating from the usual ★ (Star) mintmark.

Initially, 12,000 coins were minted and sold. However, the tremendous demand from NTR's global fan base resulted in a surge in sales, reaching 20,000 by December 2023. A senior official explained to the leading newspaper that numismatists might collect the coins as a hobby, while fans of the actor may view them as an investment, anticipating potential appreciation over time.

Certainly, it is worth mentioning that the commemorative coins from the Hyderabad Mint are 15 to 20 percent more expensive for collectors compared to those from the Mumbai Mint and Kolkata Mint. Consideration should be given to reducing the prices in the interest of numismatists and collectors, which could potentially lead to increased sales.
