Update on Former Odisha CM Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab Coin

The Government of India is set to unveil a special ₹100 coin featuring the portrait of former Odisha Chief Minister, Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab, in commemoration of his 125th Birth Anniversary.

The Ministry of Culture proposed the minting of a special commemorative coin to immortalise the memory of this iconic Odisha leader. Subsequently, the Ministry of Finance approved the proposal, and a gazette notification was issued on December 29, 2023, according to Union Minister of Culture, Arjun Ram Meghwal, who made this announcement during a ceremony commemorating Swadhinata Sangrami Divas.

Shri Bhartruhari Mahtab, Member of Parliament from Cuttack, and the son of the late Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab, confirmed the Union Minister's statement, indicating that the commemorative coin of ₹100 has been minted.

He stated, “The Ministry of Finance and the PMO have approved it. To my knowledge, the coin will be released soon. The ongoing 125th Birth Anniversary celebrations will conclude on November 21."

Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab, revered as the Utkal Keshari, is acknowledged as the visionary architect of modern Odisha. Serving as Chief Minister from 1946 to 1950 and later from 1956 to 1960, his instrumental role included steering the integration of Odia-speaking princely states, thereby shaping the contemporary landscape of Odisha.
