New Commemorative Coin: 250 Years of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd

The Government of India will issue a commemorative coin of ₹250 to mark the '250 Years of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited'. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on March 12, 2024, confirming this coin.

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), formerly known as Mazagon Dock Limited, is a prominent shipyard located in Mazagaon, Mumbai. Specializing in the construction of warships and submarines for the Indian Navy, MDL also fabricates offshore platforms and provides support vessels for offshore oil drilling. In addition to its defense-oriented projects, MDL is involved in the construction of tankers, cargo bulk carriers, passenger ships, and ferries. The shipyard plays a crucial role in the maritime industry, contributing to both military and civilian naval capabilities and supporting offshore oil and gas exploration.

The metal composition of the ₹250 coin will consist of a Quaternary Alloy, comprising 50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel, and 5% Zinc. The coin will weigh 35 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin's description is as follows.

Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “250” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.

Reverse: This face of coin shall bear the image of logo of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in the centre of the coin. The inscription “मझगांव डॉक शिपबिल्डर्स लिमिटेड के 250 वर्ष” in Devanagari script shall be written on the upper periphery. The inscription “250 Years of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited” in English shall be written on the lower periphery of coin. The years “1774-2024” in international numerals shall be flanked below the logo.
