New Commemorative Coin: Bhagwan Birsa Munda Ji
The Government of India will issue a commemorative coin with a denomination of ₹150 on occasion of '150th Birth Anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda Ji'. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on November 12, 2024, confirming this coin.
Birsa Munda (1875–1900) was a revolutionary tribal leader and freedom fighter from the Munda tribe in Jharkhand, India. Known as "Dharti Aba" or "Father of the Earth," he led the Munda Rebellion against British rule and oppressive practices like forced labor and unfair taxation. Through his leadership, Birsa inspired the Adivasi community to stand up for their rights, fostering unity and awareness of social injustices. His efforts significantly impacted India's independence movement, and his legacy endures as a symbol of indigenous pride and resistance.
The metal composition of the ₹150 coin will consist of Pure Silver (99.9%). The coin will weigh 40 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin's description is as follows.
Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “150” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.
Reverse: This face of the coin shall bear the image of Bhagwan Birsa Munda Ji in the centre of the coin. The year 2024 in the international numerals shall be inscribed below the image of Bhagwan Birsa Munda Ji respectively. The inscription “भगवान बिरसा मुंडा जी की 150 वीं जयंती” shall be written in Devanagari script on the upper periphery of the coin and the inscription “150th Birth Anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda Ji” in English shall be depicted on the lower periphery of the coin.
This commemorative coin will be a collector's delight, especially for numismatists who collect or aspire to collect coins honoring freedom fighters and the independence movement. The coin is scheduled for release on November 15, 2024, in celebration of Janjatiya Gaurav Divas, marking the 150th Birth Anniversary of Birsa Munda.
