PM Modi to Unveil ₹150 Coin on Bhagwan Birsa Munda Ji

The Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, will release a ₹150 commemorative coin and a postal stamp in honour of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, during his visit to Jamui, Bihar, on November 15, 2024 to commemorate Janjatiya Gaurav Divas.

This occasion also marks the official commencement of the 150th Birth Anniversary Year celebrations of Dharti Aaba Bhagwan Birsa Munda, the revered tribal leader, visionary social reformer, and freedom fighter who played a pivotal role in the tribal uprisings against British colonial rule.

Bhagwan Birsa Munda, born in 1875 in present-day Jharkhand, was a revered tribal leader, social reformer, and freedom fighter who played a pivotal role in the tribal uprisings against British colonial rule. Known as “Dharti Aaba” (Father of the Land), he championed the rights of indigenous communities, fought against exploitation, and worked to preserve tribal culture and identity. Birsa Munda led the Ulgulan (the Great Rebellion) to protect tribal lands and resist forced conversion, becoming a symbol of courage, justice, and resistance. His legacy continues to inspire generations, and his 150th Birth Anniversary is being commemorated nationwide to honor his invaluable contributions to India’s tribal heritage and freedom struggle.

The proposed design of the coin, shown above, will be minted by the India Government Mint, Mumbai. However, according to the gazette notification issued on 12th November 2024 by the Ministry of Finance, the ₹150 coin will be crafted from pure silver (99.9%) rather than the quaternary alloy and will weigh 40 grams, making it a substantial and valuable addition for collectors.

The commemorative coin and stamp aim to celebrate the legacy of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, who is remembered for his courageous struggle for tribal rights, social justice, and the preservation of indigenous culture and identity. Through these releases, the Government seeks to honor his contributions and inspire future generations to uphold the principles of equality, justice, and empowerment of marginalized communities.

Collectors, numismatists, and enthusiasts can look forward to this special release, which is expected to generate significant interest due to its historical significance, unique denomination, and superior quality. The event also emphasizes the importance of commemorating India’s rich cultural heritage and recognizing the invaluable contributions of tribal leaders in shaping the nation’s history.

Stay tuned for further updates, and explore other upcoming and potential commemorative coins for reference, as India continues to celebrate its diverse history through these carefully curated releases.
