PM Modi to Release ₹150 Coin on India Meteorological Department
The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will release a ₹150 commemorative coin and a postage stamp to celebrate 150 Years of India Meteorological Department on January 15, 2025, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
In addition to Shri Modi, the event will be graced by key dignitaries, including Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), other Union Ministers, scientists/engineers from the meteorological fraternity, disaster managers, and experts from various states and central government & non-government agencies with anticipated that about 3000 participants.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), will celebrate 150 years of service to the nation on January 15, 2025, having been established in 1875. IMD will continue to be recognized as one of the earliest government departments created for systematic weather observation, numerical modeling, and weather and climate forecasting over the Indian subcontinent. Its remarkable journey highlights its significant contributions to the evolution of meteorology as a modern physical science, made possible through the dedication of IMD employees and the broader meteorological community, including scientists, technologists, and administrators.
The event will not only honor the department’s rich legacy but also unveil its strategic roadmap for the future.
The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on December 31, 2024, confirming this coin. This release should mark the first commemorative coin for the year 2025, reportedly minted by the India Government Mint, Mumbai.
