Kolkata Mint Commences Bookings for BITS Pilani Coin Sets

The India Government Mint, Kolkata, has commenced bookings for the ₹60 commemorative coin issued to mark the Diamond Jubilee of BITS Pilani. The bookings are open from April 16, 2025, and it is subject to limited availability.

Earlier, the Shri Boman Irani, as the Chief Guest, released the ₹60 commemorative coin during the convocation ceremony of the 2025 graduating class of BITSoM – BITS School of Management – held on April 14, 2025, in Mumbai.

The ₹60 coin is currently issued in the Proof Set and UNC Set packaged in either a Folder or Blister pack. Additionally, the Proof Set with an MDF box may be issued at a later date.

The ₹60 coin in the Proof Set is priced at ₹3,583, while the UNC Set is priced at ₹3,305, both offered in Folder or Blister packaging. 

As the ₹60 coin marks a prestigious milestone for the institution, many students and alumni of BITS are looking forward to owning it as a symbol of pride and identity, in addition to regular numismatic collectors. This special release is expected to attract significant interest and a high number of orders for the India Government Mint from the BITS community.

These coin sets can be purchased either at the Kolkata mint premises or through the official website of the India Government Mint, with updates available in the current and upcoming bookings section.

Update: 

The India Government Mint, Kolkata, has listed the Proof Set in an MDF box package at ₹9,458 on August 10, 2026, after a gap of more than one year. The current price is nearly two and a half times higher than that of the earlier issuance in the folder package.

India Initiates Global Procurement for Polymer Banknote Substrate

India has taken another significant step towards the possible introduction of polymer banknotes with Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Private Limited (BRBNMPL) issuing a Global Expression of Interest (EOI) on July, 17 2026 for the manufacture and supply of opacified polymer substrate sheets with advanced security features. The initiative is aimed at identifying experienced domestic and international manufacturers capable of producing high-security polymer substrates suitable for printing Indian banknotes. Govt Clears RBI Pilot for ₹10 and ₹20 Polymer Banknotes

The Government of India has taken the first formal step towards the possible introduction of polymer banknotes after approving the Reserve Bank of India's proposal to conduct field trials of polymer-based ₹10 and ₹20 notes. The Ministry of Finance has authorised the RBI to print one billion pieces (one hundred crore) each of the ₹10 and ₹20 polymer banknotes for pilot circulation across selected regions of the country. The approval was confirmed by the Minister of State for Finance, Shri Pankaj Chaudhary, in a written reply to questions raised in the Lok Sabha. According to the government, the RBI intends to introduce the polymer banknotes on a trial basis to evaluate their performance under India's diverse climatic and circulation conditions.
