The Government of India will issue a ₹125 commemorative coin on the occasion of the '125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee'. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on July 8, 2025, confirming this coin.
Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was a prominent Indian politician, barrister, and academician who played a significant role in the country's political history. He served as the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta and later became the first Industry and Supply Minister of independent India. Dissatisfied with the policies of the Nehru government, he founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, which later evolved into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Dr. Mookerjee is also remembered for his strong stance on the integration of Jammu and Kashmir with India.

This will be the second occasion on which a commemorative coin is being issued in honour of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee. Earlier, on April 5, 2002, coins in denominations of ₹100, ₹50, ₹10, and ₹2 were released to mark his Birth Centenary. The commemorative coins were unveiled at a function in Kolkata by the then Union Minister of Tourism, Shri Jagmohan.
The ₹125 commemorative coin was highly anticipated, especially after the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, announced the celebrations of the 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee during her address to the Parliament on January 31, 2025. Her mention of the occasion underscored its national significance and paved the way for a series of tributes, including the issuance of the special coin. This coin marks a symbolic tribute to Dr. Mookerjee’s enduring legacy and contributions to the nation.
The commemorative coin is scheduled to be released on July 9, 2025, by Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Hon’ble Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, as part of the two-year commemoration of the 125th birth anniversary of Bharat Kesari, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, being observed from July 6, 2025, to July 6, 2027.
