Shri Yogi Adityanath Receives ₹150 IMD Commemorative Coin
The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Shri Jitendra Singh, along with the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Yogi Adityanath, inaugurated the newly established Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) at Lucknow on June 8, 2026.
The state-of-the-art facility is expected to strengthen weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and disaster preparedness across Uttar Pradesh and the surrounding region, further enhancing the capabilities of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in delivering timely and accurate meteorological services.
During the inauguration ceremony, Shri Jitendra Singh respectfully presented the ₹150 commemorative coin issued to mark the 150 Years of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to Chief Minister Shri Yogi Adityanath. The presentation highlighted the enduring contribution of the IMD towards weather forecasting, scientific research, disaster management, and public safety since its establishment in 1875.
The ₹150 commemorative coin had originally been released by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on January 14, 2025, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, during the celebrations to mark the 150 Years of the India Meteorological Department. The release formed part of a series of events recognizing the institution’s remarkable journey from a colonial-era weather service to one of the world's leading meteorological organizations.
The commemorative coin struck in 99.9% pure silver, weighs 40 grams and measures 44 millimetres in diameter and features 200 serrations along the edge.
The obverse of the coin bears the Lion Capital of the Ashoka Pillar at the centre, with “सत्यमेव जयते” inscribed below. The word “भारत” in Devanagari script appears on the left periphery, while “INDIA” is inscribed on the right periphery. Below the national emblem are the Rupee symbol “₹” and the denomination “150” in international numerals.
The reverse showcases the official logo of the 150 Years of India Meteorological Department celebrations. The upper periphery carries the inscriptions “भारत मौसम विज्ञान विभाग के 150 वर्ष” and “आदित्यात् जायते वृष्टि:” in Devanagari script, while the lower periphery bears the inscription “150 Years of India Meteorological Department” in English. Beneath the logo appear the years “1875–2025”, marking the department’s 150-year legacy.
The India Government Mint, Mumbai opened bookings for this commemorative coin on June 17, 2025. The coin was offered in both Proof and Uncirculated (UNC) Sets, in folder and blister packaging formats, while the Proof Set was additionally made available in an MDF box.
The presentation of the ₹150 commemorative coin at the inauguration of the Lucknow Regional Meteorological Centre symbolically linked IMD’s rich 150-year heritage with its ongoing modernization efforts. As India continues to invest in advanced weather forecasting infrastructure and climate resilience, both the commemorative coin and the new Regional Meteorological Centre stand as reminders of the department’s crucial role in safeguarding lives, supporting agriculture, and contributing to national development.
