2023 - Onam (Kolkata Mint) | Mint Souvenir Token
The India Government Mint, Kolkata, issued silver souvenir token in 2023 to mark the auspicious occasion of the Onam festival.
Onam is one of the most important festivals of Kerala, celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm. It is traditionally regarded as a harvest festival and is deeply connected with Kerala’s cultural heritage, customs and traditions.
The festival is associated with the legendary King Mahabali, whose reign is remembered as a golden period of prosperity, equality and happiness. According to popular belief, King Mahabali returns to Kerala during Onam to visit his people. His homecoming is celebrated with colourful decorations, feasts and various cultural activities.
The celebrations traditionally extend over ten days, beginning with Atham and culminating in Thiruvonam, the most significant day of the festival. Homes are decorated with beautiful Pookkalam, intricate floral arrangements created at the entrance. Families prepare the traditional Onam Sadya, a grand vegetarian feast served on banana leaves.
Onam is also celebrated through Kerala’s distinctive cultural traditions, including Vallam Kali (snake boat races), traditional dances, music and folk performances. People wear traditional attire, exchange greetings and spend time with family and friends.
More than a harvest celebration, Onam represents prosperity, harmony, equality and togetherness. It remains a vibrant expression of Kerala’s cultural identity and continues to bring communities together in a spirit of joy and celebration.
